Assistive Technology (AT)
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to any device, product, or system that is designed to assist individuals with disabilities in performing tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible for them. Assistive technology encompasses a wide range of products and systems, including specialized hardware and software, as well as products and tools that are commonly available but can be adapted or configured to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Assistive technology can help individuals with disabilities to overcome barriers and to lead more independent, productive, and fulfilling lives. Examples of assistive technology include text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, screen readers, alternative input devices such as keyboard alternatives and eye-tracking devices, and environmental control systems for controlling lights and appliances. Assistive technology can be used in many settings, including in the home, at school, in the workplace, and in the community, and it can play a critical role in helping individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals and to live more fully integrated lives.
