The modes of formation of subjects that have been recognised are.

1. Lamination

According. to Ranganathan “when the basic layer is a basic subject and the other layers are isolate ideas, a compound subject is formed”. 

Example

Kind 1: Anatomy of the human body. Kind 2: Ayurvedic system of medicine,

2. Loose Assemblage

Loose assemblage is assembling together of two or more of:

a) subjects (basic or compound)

b) isolate ideas (in one and the same facet, or isolate ideas in one and the same array)

Example

Kind 1 Statistics for librarians. Kind 2 Influence of Buddhism on Christianity. Kind 3 Medicine – Ayurvedic system – tropical environment child.

3. Fission

Example –Natural sciences, useful arts, humanities, social sciences, 

4. Fusion

Example- Biochemistry, astrophysics. 

5. Distillation

Example- management, anesthesiology

6. Clustering

Example- area study, Gandhiana, soil sciences.

6. Agglomeration

Example – psychology and sociology
