Citation analysis

Citation analysis is a method of evaluating the impact of a publication or researcher by counting the number of times their work is cited by others. The basic idea is that the more a publication or researcher is cited, the more impactful and influential their work is considered to be in their field.

For example, consider a researcher named Alice who has published several articles in the field of psychology. A citation analysis of Alice’s work might involve counting the number of times her articles have been cited by other researchers in psychology. If her articles are cited frequently, it would suggest that her work is highly regarded in the field and that she is making a significant contribution to the field’s body of knowledge.

Citation analysis tools are tools that assist researchers in conducting citation analysis. Some common citation analysis tools include:

  1. Google Scholar: A popular search engine for scholarly literature, Google Scholar allows researchers to search for articles, theses, books, and conference papers, and provides a citation count for each item.

  2. Web of Science: A subscription-based research database that covers over 12,000 international journals across all disciplines. It provides citation information and analysis tools, such as the Journal Citation Reports, which provide journal-level citation data.

  3. Scopus: Another subscription-based research database that covers over 22,000 international journals, as well as conference proceedings and book series. It provides citation data and analysis tools, including the Scopus Source List and the CiteScore metrics.

  4. Pubmed: A free search engine for medical and life sciences literature. It provides citation information and analysis tools, such as the Journal Citation Reports and the Impact Factor, which provide journal-level citation data.

These tools provide researchers with the ability to conduct in-depth citation analysis, allowing them to track the impact of their work, as well as the work of others in their field.
