Altmetrics

Altmetrics is a term used to describe alternative methods for measuring the impact and influence of research and scholarly output. Unlike traditional bibliometric metrics, such as citations, which focus on the number of times a publication is cited in the scientific literature, altmetrics attempt to capture the broader impact of research by taking into account other forms of engagement and dissemination, such as online mentions, social media shares, and policy citations. Altmetrics data can provide a more nuanced picture of the impact and influence of research, especially in areas where traditional metrics may be less relevant, such as interdisciplinary or rapidly developing fields. By providing additional metrics for evaluating research impact, altmetrics can complement traditional bibliometrics and offer a more comprehensive view of the ways in which research is used and valued by various stakeholders.
