India's Vision for Research and Development

Event Address by the Prime Minister on 15th August, 2022
Message The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of Research and Development (R&D) in the country’s future and called for a focus on innovation during the Amrit Kaal. His call for “Jai Anusandhan” (Hail Research) reflects the nation’s commitment to research and innovation.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 The NEP 2020 also emphasizes the importance of research as a key pillar for achieving world-class education and national progress in India.

Introducing One Nation One Subscription (ONOS)

Initiative One Nation One Subscription (ONOS)
Purpose The Government of India launched ONOS to provide nationwide access to high-quality global research articles and journals for students, researchers, and faculty members across all higher education institutions and government research bodies in India.
Vision This initiative aligns with India’s vision of becoming self-reliant and progressing by 2047.

What is ONOS?

Objective ONOS aims to procure national-level subscriptions for digital journals and databases from over 30 leading international publishers. This will enable students, researchers, and faculty members across India to access scholarly content that was previously inaccessible, especially for institutions in underserved areas.
Scope ONOS will provide free access to more than **1.8 crore** students, researchers, and faculty members, helping to foster research across all disciplines. It will encourage both core and interdisciplinary fields of study, bringing substantial transformation to India's research ecosystem.

Implementation and Timeline

Start Date January 1, 2025
Phase Duration The first phase will cover the years **2025**, **2026**, and **2027**.
Managing Body The initiative will be managed by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC).
